About Us

Who We Are

The National Union of Lawyers, Judicial Officers and Allied Workers (NULJAW) is a Labour Union founded on the principle of exercising our sovereign and inalienable right to freedom of association. We are committed to promoting social and economic interests and principles, and to fostering a honest, representative, viable, vibrant, voluntary, democratic, independent, and free Labour Union.

NULJAW operates with full cognizance of the existing and relevant legal framework, specifically Article 29 (1) (e) and Article 40 (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, which guarantee workers' freedom to association as a vital means of improving conditions for Labour workers and ensuring sustainable progress.

To uphold the dignity of labour and preserve, strengthen and protect human and labour rights.

Our Mission

To fully organize and represent workers in the National Union of Lawyers, Judicial officers and Allied workers (NULJAW) to have their rights, social and economic interests well-articulated, advocated, promoted, and defended by the Union.

Our Scope & Membership

NULJAW aims to secure complete organization and membership of all workers employed in the justice sector. Our membership is open to all unionisable workers within the establishments demarcated by the Union.

Membership Includes:

  • All employees in the Legal Profession, including Enrolled Advocates, Lawyers, Judicial officers, Paralegals, and Legal Clerks.
  • Workers in Law firms, Courts, Legal Aid Service Providers, Legal Departments, Organizations, Companies, Parastatals, all kinds of Institutions, Agencies, Businesses and Entities in all sectors that employ legal personnel for representation.
  • Judiciary sector staff.

Membership Process

Application for membership is addressed to the General Secretary using designated forms. Upon admission, members are bound by the Union constitution, rules, and decisions of its governing organs.

The General Secretary issues membership cards and maintains a current register of all members.

Our Aims & Objectives

For Our Members

  • To regulate wages and conditions of our members and generally to protect their interests.
  • To regulate relations and settle disputes between members and employers.
  • To represent the rights of our members and engage in collective bargaining agreements.
  • To provide an instrument for cooperation among the judiciary's employees.

For the Legal Profession

  • To be the voice of the noble legal profession and promote members' professional development.
  • To contribute to upholding and promoting the rule of law in Uganda.
  • To further the development of law as an instrument of social engineering and justice.
  • To participate in all matters aimed at improving delivery of justice.

For Union Sustainability

  • To promote viable economic projects to improve and strengthen the Union financial base.
  • To establish and maintain funds by means of entrance fees, voluntary contributions, and subscriptions.
  • To acquire, sell, lease, mortgage, or otherwise deal with any moveable or immoveable property.
  • To pursue any other objects which a Labour Union may legally perform.
